Balul Mărțișorului

After a beautiful winter, with sceneries like painted from the Grimm Brothers stories, we are looking forward to a triumphant spring, where our spirits will blossom again in the light of a new re-genesis.

Once again our Association will get together to celebrate the “Mărțișor” our unique Romanian tradition which symbolizes the beginning of spring and a celebration of the first of March. The name (Mărțișor) is the diminutive of March (in Romanian Martie), and thus means something like “little” or “dear March”, symbolizing that people are looking forward to the month of March for the spring to come and nature to blossom back to life in a beautiful explosion of fresh colors and flowery smells.

As part of the tradition, men offer women a talisman object (called Mărțișor), consisting of a jewel of a small decoration (like a flower, an animal or a heart) tied to a red and white string. A woman wears it pinned to her blouse on this day and up to two weeks after. It was believed that the one who wears the red and white string would be powerful and healthy for the year to come. The decoration is a symbol of the coming spring.

To celebrate this magic moment, we invite you and your dear ones to participate at a night of fun, good spirits, dance and dinner on Saturday – March 4 at Stefanos Restaurant in New Westminster.
